Spricka, öppning, brospann

Jag kan föreställa mig
att somliga barn simmar lättare i träd
än i floder.

' Once.' said the Mock Turtle at last, with a deep sigh, 'I was a real turtle.'

(Lewis Carrol)

Never imagine yourself not to be otherwise than what it might appear to others that vhat you were or might have been was not otherwise than what you had been would have appeared to them to be otherwise.

(Lewis Carrol)

Crack, opening, bridge span

I could imagine
That some children swim more easily in trees
Than in rivers.
Others stand where the waters
Part and flow away,
Stock still, watching,
Their eyes filled with astonished darkness.
Looking down into their first listening deep.

(Lars Noren)

One way to challenge the boundaries of the specific area of expression within which you work is to upset the balance between perception and act by, say, listening with your eyes or seeing by moving your hands over pictures in progress. You could alter the position of the viewer, modify the chains of representation, you could engage in playful rabbit-chasing until every civilized notion has been turned on its head and you lose yourself in wonder and dream time.

Lisa Deannin fuses reality and art experience in series of disconcerting, imaginative modulations. A tortoise becomes a cartoon duck dressed in pineapple skins and she herself turns into a mummy. A drawing becomes a video encompassing that very drawing. A motif from her I - Ching book takes over a wall.

A few years ago she appeared at the Circus Circus exhibition at Kristianstad Konsthall dressed up as a tortoise. After being helped onto the stage (tortoises have a hard time with steps) she performed on a pedal steel - a curious instrument that produces the familiar Hawaiian sound. Jeannin, the tortoise, kept her back turned to the audience. She was surrounded by a video projection that transported her to other spaces and allowed yet another musician to appear on her shell.

'Once,' said the Mock Turtle at last, with a deep sigh, 'I was a real turtle.'

(Lewis Carrol)

Several layers of presence thus characterize her pieces. There is a whole succession of widely disparate models of representation. A certain figure may show up as a sculptural object ("a large wood drawing"), animated in a film or video or invoked in a performance. A constant element is the simple drawing, discriminating, listening in its registration, sign-like - yet alive through the magic movements of pen on paper. Sometimes there are drawings within drawings, or maybe drawings within a suitcase.

The ease with which she strikes new bargains with her audience on how to create reality is liberating. This time we enter Jeannin space through a crack, an unexpected opening in space and time. Under the bridge, the place of our arrival, we find a living skeleton of a child (is it really a child?) suspended in front of a painted animation which speaks to us with the authority of a persistent dream. We find ourselves inscribed in the layers of the exhibitions, layers of tales, images and desires:

An unsolved Gordian knot of dreamed fates

(Gunnar Ekelöf)

This may obviously appear disconcerting, if not outright provocative.
The atmosphere is welcoming and seductive, although we occasionally feel the need to resist it for a moment. Is it because our normal method of producing reality - using rational thought - is now ignored? Or is it an ancient sense of recognition? The intelligibility of magical connections?

Lisa Jeannin offers us groups of fragments taken from a flexible and fantastic cosmology. Her internal world history, constantly implemented with new psychosocial laws of nature, lies outside the civilized order that we like to think of as generally valid, outside of the expectations of common sense. And yet - and this is where subversiveness may enter the picture - the world that she explores is not unfamiliar.

My poetry is ill at ease where permission is sought
Where obedience whispers and dictates murmur.

(Gustaf Fröding)

States as method: Lawlessness, dreaming, latency, paranoia and hallucinations are all used as openings for thought and the shadow of thought. They make generosity of perception possible, they allow for ontological politeness in the midst of impertinence. Play and imagination keeps dictatorship of the mind at bay and radical introspection, if free from coquetry, works the same way. In this case, nothing is driven by sham therapeutic confessional urge - her works describe actual ways of changing our reading of the world.

What she proposes is contemporaneousness, non- linearity. The beam of the video projection doubles the space and opens existence to spatial trajectories, bifurcations and confluences in memory and the present, true freedom of choice. For vaulting over and past your own identity.

Never imagine yourself not to be otherwise than what it might appear to others that vhat you were or might have been was not otherwise than what you had been would have appeared to them to be otherwise.

(Lewis Carrol)

Using the surrealist method (but minus its Utopian aspirations) Jeannin's objects introduce us to new and productively relaxed languages from which our lives may derive nourishment. Even more important, however, is probably the fact that we get to know these objects as if they were individuals or at least parts in a dramatic production. Our attitude toward them is not primarily one of analytical distance. That would be impolite, even arrogant, since they present themselves as individuals with a life of their own, a will of their own, and their own internal communication. Only in retrospect do these figures begin to function as symbols that may be interpreted within a linguistic system.

Some of the actors have their origin in a store of common childhood objects, toys and tools. One drawing that comes to mind is of a troll with a shock of hair, topping a pencil. When asked "What's in your mouth?" he answers "None of your goddam business!" Here are some of the reasons why Lisa Jeannin's works are so enticing and in many ways so "accessible". Open references to and echoes of popular culture and of the tangled jungles of our public and collective existence, the archeological resurrection of familiar artifacts from the 40's, quotations from the comics, Yngve Stoor, 78's...

It is clear that Lisa Jeannin finds it important to preserve this fragile incomprehensibility. Managing to avoid individual statements and ideas may seem a great victory - not least because they would be a regression into the repressive system that the artistic gesture seeks to undermine. This is not to say that her works lack meaning or that they are like hastily thrown together random speech - "word salad", to use a derogatory expression usually reserved for the charged but inaccessible language of the mentally ill.

It is easy to give rise to expectations when it comes to the psychoanalytical interpretation of art and to let yourself to be lured into mysterious labyrinths in search of an answer, resolution, trauma and guilt. This is a poor breeding-ground for critical thinking, however, but, then, we are all guilty of looking for an easy way out. (Besides, it is easy to interpret Freud to say: If only we can find the innermost, hidden biographical sequence then we will have secured the truth of our view of the world at the expense of Schreber and the Wolf Man.)

I came as the God of happiness when answers have been extinguished but for the light of a single question.

(Gunnar Björling)

As we pass through the membrane between the spaces, the mirror, the crack in the fabric of space and time, we would do well to give up any hope of being able to orient ourselves. The real world is not a sequence of linked rebuses. Jeannin's hyperspace must be accepted on its own terms. I am therefore trying not to engage in a therapeutic search for a goal and accept the world for what it is. And then: what is it that happens between it and me? Which realities can I allow?

Finally a little poem for the artist:

Sugar on a flower, an open window.
Carpet resting calm on a current of air homeward.
She runs her toy car in circles on the carpet
Secure in an immense, calm illusion.
